NEW 2021 SSANGYONG KORANDO E-MOTION ELECTRIC
The Korean brand’s first electric car will go on sale in Europe this August and will be followed up by a medium-sized electric SUV.
SsangYong has shared the first official image of its first electric car: the Korando e-Motion. The electric version of the Korean brand’s compact SUV went into production earlier in June, but will not arrive in Malta until later this year due to the global semiconductor shortage.
The e-Motion will share the basic design of the existing petrol and diesel-engined Korando, but with electric-specific design touches such as a blanked-off grille.
It was previously claimed that the Korando e-Motion would feature a 61.5kWh battery, making it capable of 261 miles according to the now-outdated NEDC test cycle. Therefore, we expect the Korando e-Motion should be capable of around 200 miles under the newer WLTP testing regime.
The Korando e-Motion is also expected to use a single electric motor generating 188bhp, which would make it the most powerful Korando in the line-up. Performance figures have not yet been released, although SsangYong is promising “best-in-class” acceleration and a top speed in the region of 95mph from the e-Motion.
SsangYong has also confirmed it’s developing a second electric model – a medium-sized SUV codenamed the J100, which it plans to launch in 2022. So far, SsangYong has only released concept drawings of the J100, which indicate it will feature more rugged, off-road-focused styling.
